Michael T. McDermott, MD is Professor of Medicine & Clinical Pharmacy and Endocrinology & Diabetes Practice Director at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He is the author of Endocrine Secrets, 6th Edition, a volume in the popular Secrets series.
After receiving his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. McDermott performed his postgraduate work at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado, specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. He then spent 20 years in the U.S. Army, during which time he served as the Chief of the Endocrinology Service and Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship program at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and as the Endocrinology Consultant to the Surgeon General.
Dr. McDermott’s clinical research interests include the treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, the treatment of osteoporosis and related metabolic bone diseases, and the pathophysiology of disorders of the thyroid gland. His basic research interests have included studying the molecular events underlying the development of thyroid and pituitary tumors.
Among Dr. McDermott’s many awards are Physician of the Year (University of Colorado Hospital); Outstanding Clinical Teacher (University of Colorado Medical School); Distinguished Physician of the Year (Endocrine Society); and Top Doctors in Denver (5280 Magazine, 2004-2012). He was also voted a 5280 Best Doctor by his peers in response to the question, “Which physician would you trust to treat you and your family?”
Dr. McDermott serves his community as president of the Colorado Leadership Council, American Diabetes Association and as a member of the Medical Advisory Board, 9 Health Fair, Colorado.
