“Knowing that we are improving the care for babies in a very broad way, not just in Cleveland, not just in the US, but across the world, is really incredibly rewarding.” – Michele C. Walsh, MD
I always thought I would be a nurse, but when I was first starting out I had the opportunity to work in a hospital and get exposed to the full range of medical careers. I found that I liked the independence and critical thinking associated with being a doctor. I had always worked with kids and I knew I wanted to be in pediatrics. When I started my training in medical school, my very first preceptor on the first day of medical school was one of my mentors who then introduced me to Dr. Marshall Klaus, Dr. Avroy Fanaroff and Dr. Richard Martin. After that day there was no doubt in my mind what I wanted to do.
Fanaroff and Martin’s Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, 9th Edition has contributors are from around the world. It has been really exciting to be able to incorporate these different viewpoints. We’ve focused not only on large Western healthcare systems, which have every resource available, but also on our colleagues around the world who take care of moms and babies with very few resources. Broadening the text to try to address their needs has been really challenging, but it’s an area that we want to continue to work on.
It’s been such a privilege to be invited to work with Dr. Fanaroff and Dr. Martin on the book, to carry on the book’s legacy, and to be able to pass on the knowledge from our training to others. Knowing that we are improving the care for babies in a very broad way, not just in Cleveland, not just in the US, but across the world, is really incredibly rewarding.
