Peter Wiedemann, MD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Leipzig in Germany, and is Director of the University Eye Hospital. He is a co-author of Retina, 5th Edition.
Dr. Wiedemann is internationally recognized for his academic and clinical accomplishments in retina, pharmacology, and cell and molecular biology. He is the European University Professors of Ophthalmology representative for Germany and the European Association for Vision and Eye Research Program Secretary for Retina. He has been the president of the German Ophthalmology Society and he is a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Council of Ophthalmology and the Academia Leopoldina.
Dr. Wiedemann served as chairman of the World Ophthalmology Congress Scientific Program, International Council of Ophthalmology in 2012, where his duties included the selection of topics for more than 500 scientific sessions, representing 35 ophthalmology subspecialties, and coordinating the recruitment of 2,000 internationally recognized guest speakers. He is slated to hold this same position in 2014, in Tokyo.
A prolific author, Dr. Wiedemann has over 300 publications to his credit. He has served as Vice Rektor for this University and led one of the most impressive turnarounds in ophthalmology in the world, making his eye clinic currently one of the best in Germany.
