Philip D. Lumb, MB, BS, MCCM is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Keck Medical Center of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.  He is the editor of the Journal of Critical Care and author of Ultrasound in Critical Care Medicine, which is due to publish in 2014.

Dr. Lumb received his medical degree from Westminster Medical School; did internships at Westminster Hospital (surgery) and Royal Victoria Hospital (internal medicine); and performed a residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in anesthesiology (chief resident) and critical care medicine. He is board certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine.

Dr. Lumb held a number of distinguished academic and administrative appointments prior to establishing his career at the University of Southern California. Former positions include vice chairman and associate professor of anesthesiology at Duke University; chairman and professor of anesthesiology at Albany Medical College; and chairman and Eric A. Walter Professor of Anesthesiology at Penn State-Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Other notable previous appointments of Dr. Lumb include president and secretary-general of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine and chancellor and secretary general at the American College of Critical Care Medicine. A recipient of the Handcock Prize of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Hilmer Burchardi Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Lumb has been honored for his devotion to the science and practice of anesthesia. He is a member of several renowned professional societies, including the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine, and is fluent in French.
