Interview with Dr. Fadi W Abdul-Karim and Dr. Charles Sturgis

It is a comprehensive book with expert authors and clear practical writing and images. This publication provides readers with advice from experts on many of the most challenging differential diagnostic quandaries in the practice of surgical pathology.

As a breast pathologist, I am most excited about the chapter on diseases of the breast.

Both morphologic and ancillary testing tips are provided in this concisely arranged volume. The information is up-to-date and written by many experts in the field.

What problem do you hope the future generation of pathologists will be able to solve?  

It is my hope that future generations will find the topically oriented differential diagnosis approach of this volume to be of value with clinical, radiologic, and ancillary testing correlates supplementing the text, figures, and tables in a format that provides all of the necessary details in an easy-to-use format.

About the Authors

Fadi W. Abdul-Karim, M.D., MEd 

Fadi Wm. Karim graduated from the American University of Beirut Lebanon in 1979.  He did his residency in anatomic pathology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and a surgical pathology fellowship at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1983-84.  He was on faculty at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland as a professor of pathology and director of anatomic pathology and cytology until 2011.  In 2011 he returned to the American University of Beirut where he served as vice-chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and assistant dean for medical education.  He served as a staff pathologist in the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic from 2012- 2019.  Dr. Abdul-Karim also has a master’s degree in medical education from Case and John Carroll University and served as vice-chair for education at the Pathology Laboratory Medicine Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Case and teaches pathology at Ohio Univ. Heritage School of Medicine, Balamand Univ., and Michigan Central Univ.  Dr. Karim has authored 229 publications, and more than 20 book chapters and has been a speaker at many National and International Conferences.  Dr. Karim is an editor of the 3 pathology books on pathology. He is the lead author of the Atypical Squamous Cells chapter in The Bethesda System for reporting cervical cytology.  

Dr. Charles D. Sturgis completed medical school at the University of Kansas in 1992.  Following medical school, he matriculated in the combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency program at Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois, completing training in 1997.  The residency was followed by a year of fellowship in cytopathology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.  Dr. Sturgis’ prior professional roles have included positions as the Director of FNA Services at Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital, the Director of Cytopathology at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, PLLC Board Member at CellNetix Pathology in Seattle, Washington, and Associate Professor of Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Sturgis is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscript publications as well as the author of book chapters, editorials, educational writings, medical photographs, instructional videos, and abstracts.  He is now a Professor of Pathology and the Director of the Pathology Residency Training Program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  His chief interests include cytopathology, breast pathology, and education.
