Interview with Joe Niamtu, DMD, FAACS, Medical Director
Why did you feel that it was important to write a book on this topic? What does The Art and Science of Facelift Surgery, 2nd Edition add to the field?
My first textbook entitled cosmetic facial surgery is now in its third edition and has one of the biggest commitments of my life. My second textbook was a video Atlas of face and necklift surgery and the first edition sold very well and of course I wanted to do a second edition which has just been released. I feel that these textbooks are a big part of my legacy. I feel it is important to show young doctors the key to patient safety and predictable outcomes as well as serve as a refresher for surgeons already in practice. My method of teaching is sort of first person writing describing in an informal style how I learned these procedures what to do and what not to do to stay safe and predictable. I rely very heavily on step by step teaching with very detailed live surgery clinical photographs and videos. This is my trademark means of teaching and has proven to be very effective internationally.
What is the most exciting aspect of The Art and Science of Facelift Surgery, 2nd Edition? What chapter or topic covered are you most excited about?
I describe the release of a new textbook like the birth of a child because it has taken months and months and many hundreds of hours of writing photographing videoing and editing the work period it is very exciting for me it is similar to a premier for an actor. I get to announce to the world my new work and watch it become a very popular selling textbook.
I guess my favorite chapters are the chapter on how to do a facelift which is extremely detailed and I’m very proud of it. Also, the chapter on complications is totally my work and although no surgeon wants to have problems it is so important to let people know how to identify treat and avoid complications.
Who will find the greatest value from this book and why?
The greatest value from this book is the easy reading and step by step teaching with text pictures and videos.
What new ideas, practices, or procedures do you hope your readers take away from The Art and Science of Facelift Surgery, 2nd Edition?
I’ve included numerous contributors that are leaders in plastic and cosmetic facial surgery and I believe that the readers will greatly benefit from this combination of expertise.
What problem do you hope the future generation of your specialty will be able to solve?
Well, I guess textbooks are becoming extinct and everything is going digital. There’s still something about possessing a book and having it on your shelf and be able to pull it down anytime regardless of Internet access etcetera the books on my shelves are my greatest hits and I treasure them.
Is there anything else about the book you’d like to say?
I want readers to understand how much time, blood, sweat and tears that I put into these textbooks and my sincere and humble writing style and my ability to bring people quickly up to speed with my writing and graphics. It is my honor to have been asked to write these texts.
