Interview with Scott J. Swanson, M.D.

How has Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest, 10th Edition evolved since the previous edition? How has it evolved since the first edition?

More minimally invasive approaches described. More multi disciplinary treatments described. More technological innovation.

What is the most exciting aspect of the new edition? What chapter or topic covered in the Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest, 10th Edition are you most excited about?

The idea that major thoracic surgery is now being done minimally invasively with little hospital stay and greater cure rates. This idea is sprinkled across all of the chapters and it is very inspiring.

Who will find the greatest value from Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest, 10th Edition, and why? Has the audience changed since the book was first published?

I believe all thoracic surgeons will benefit greatly from early trainees to seasoned surgeons since it highlights new developments in lung cancer and esophageal cancer treatment including medical advances as well as surgical changes.  The world-leading experts are teaching us about these topics.

What new ideas, practices, or procedures would you like to highlight for the new edition?

Segmentectomy for lung cancer, Robotic approaches to the lung and esophagus, and immunotherapy.

What problem do you hope the future generation of your specialty will be able to solve?

Identifying cancers at smaller and earlier timepoint facilitating higher rates of cure and less invasive treatments. Molecular understanding of these cancers such that we have better systemic therapies and treatment of more advanced cancers.

Is there anything else about the book you’d like to say?

The illustrations and pictures are fantastic.
