Interview with Tulio E. Bertorini, M.D.
How has Neuromuscular Case Studies, 2nd Edition evolved since the previous edition?
Since the first edition of this book, we’ve seen great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases, including new genetic therapy and immunological treatment, all of which we’ve included. In addition, we expanded the text around diagnostic methods. We added several new cases, some of which have been recently reported, and we added new information and developments related to the cases described in the first edition.
What is the most exciting aspect of Neuromuscular Case Studies, 2nd Edition? What chapter or topic covered in the new edition are you most excited about?
The descriptions of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods are exciting, as well as the addition of new demonstrative cases that provide excellent teaching and reference material.
Who will find the greatest value from Neuromuscular Case Studies, 2nd Edition and why? Has the audience changed since the book was first published?
The book will be an excellent resource (including useful references) for those who care for patients with neuromuscular diseases, and those who provide differential diagnosis and discuss actual treatment.
What new ideas, practices, or procedures would you like to highlight for the new edition?
I would highlight that the second edition covers not only focal disorders to help localize and manage, but also generalized inherited or acquired diseases.
What problem do you hope the future generation of your specialty will be able to solve?
This book will help future generations of specialists better understand and manage many different disorders. It could help various specialists and professions, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, physiatrists, orthopedists, neurologists, pediatric neurologists, and all those who participate in neuromuscular clinics, EMG laboratories, and histology laboratories.
Is there anything else about the book you’d like to say?
My hope (and intention) is that this book will help people. We offer over 100 cases, each of which provides excellent diagnostic and therapeutic exercises.
