How has Steinert’s Cataract Surgery evolved since the previous edition?
There have been remarkable advances in the field of cataract surgery over the past several years. Since the last (3rd) edition, which was published in 2009, our knowledge, technology, and techniques for the pre-, intra-, and post-operative management of these patients have evolved dramatically. Nearly every aspect of our field has seen important advances that improve safety, efficiency, and quality of vision following cataract surgery. An update was due!
What is the most exciting aspect of the new edition? What chapter or topic covered in the new edition are you most excited about?
This edition is exciting in many ways. Our goal in this edition was to provide a comprehensive overview and update of the advances in our field, using a richly illustrated text replete with technique videos—over 130 of them, in fact. While building on the knowledge from previous editions, we added many new authors and editors. Every topic has been approached afresh to incorporate modern approaches and thinking with respect to how we treat cataract patients.
New topics include current approaches to biometry and IOL selection, latest advances in astigmatism correction, management of complications, complex surgical techniques such as intra-scleral haptic fixation, new phaco technology updates in drug delivery, management of glaucoma and cataracts, corneal issues in cataract surgery, femtosecond laser cataract surgery, contemporary methodology for presbyopia correction at the time of cataract surgery, and the list goes on.
Who will find the greatest value from this book and why? Has the audience changed since the book first published?
This book has value to anyone who performs or is involved with cataract surgery. The book covers topics from basic to advanced. One of the aims of the book is to serve both as a quick reference to allow surgeons to refresh their knowledge on a particular topic and as a comprehensive text with in-depth detail to help surgeons master new areas in the field. The many narrated videos help to drive home the learning.
Is there anything else about the book you’d like to say?
We are honored to be part of this book, and we want to extend a huge thank you to our authors, section editors, and editorial staff. We hope that this book is a great learning tool as well as an homage to our dear friend, Roger Steinert, who set the bar so high in the first 3 editions.
About the Editors
We (Sam Garg and Doug Koch) are the Chief Editors of the 4th edition of Steinert’s Cataract Surgery. Sam is affiliated with the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine, and Doug with the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. We are both ophthalmologists by training and have a particular interest in cataract surgery – the most frequently performed surgery worldwide.
