Richard Goering, BA, MSc, PhD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Director of Molecular Epidemiology at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He is a co-author of Mims’ Medical Microbiology, 5th Edition.
Dr. Goering received his MS in biology (microbial genetics) from Wichita State University, and his PhD in microbiology (staphylococcal genetics) from Iowa State University. His areas of specialty include application of molecular techniques to the epidemiology and diagnosis of infectious diseases, mechanisms of gram-positive microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents, staphylococci and staphylococcal diseases, and genomics of gram-positive microbial pathogens.
Dr. Goering’s laboratory is involved in research related to the epidemiological analysis of problem bacterial pathogens, searching for new, previously unknown, chromosomal “signature” sequences that may help to identify problem bacterial pathogens and better allow scientists to monitor their spread.
