“It’s ‘one stop shopping’ for maternal fetal medicine specialists.” – Dr. Robert Resnik
The hottest issue right now is the area of prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities from DNA and maternal blood. It’s going to be a game-changer in fetal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities. We’ll be able to do non-invasive testing with a high degree of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for things like trisomy 2, trisomy 18, and the other chromosome abnormalities. It’s going be exciting to watch over the next year or two how it impacts the current gold standard of genetic amniocentesis and what will happen to nuchal screening. In other words, how will this new technology fit in?
Prior to this edition, we decided to include the technology and the mechanics of fetal imaging in a major way so we could provide a text that would be “one stop shopping” for maternal fetal medicine specialists. With the expansion to an electronic edition of Creasy and Resnik’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine: Principles and Practice, we have the opportunity to put in literally hundreds of images that we wouldn’t be able to put into a print text, as well as 3-D ultrasound, and video clips, for example, of fetal cardiac legions. I think that the seventh edition, upcoming, is going to be another major step forward, because it will have all of the updated basic and clinical areas, as well as a complete entity of obstetrical imaging.
In the very early 1980s, there was no textbook available that covered both the basic and clinical sciences of the new subspecialty of maternal and fetal medicine, so Bob Creasy, who was the Director of maternal fetal medicine at UC San Francisco, and I decided that we would develop one. Maternal-fetal medicine was a quite small subspeciality at the time. We all knew each other and we were able to get a lot of people on board with a tremendous amount of expertise to contribute to it and that’s how the first edition of Creasy and Resnik’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine: Principles and Practice got going.
