Stanley W. Ashley, MD is a surgical oncologist renowned as a clinical practitioner, researcher and instructor in colorectal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, laparoscopic surgery and pancreatic surgery. Dr. Ashley is the Frank Sawyer Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and attending surgeon in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Harvard’s Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He is also the vice chair of surgery and director of the general surgery program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Widely published in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Ashley’s research focuses on developing new treatments for surgical disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, with an emphasis on maximizing synergy between clinical and basic research. Current areas of focus include intestinal regeneration, diurnal rhythms in intestinal function and gastrointestinal cancer. He co-authored Atlas of Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques. In addition to multiple “Best Doctors in America” honors, Dr. Ashley is widely recognized for his leadership in surgical training. He is the recipient of Brigham and Women’s Hospital General Surgery Residency Matson Faculty Teaching Award, the American College of Surgeons Australia and New Zealand Traveling Fellowship, and the UCLA Department of Surgery Golden Scalpel Award for Excellence in Teaching.
