Steven G. Gabbe, MD discusses his new text, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, 6th Edition, and the exciting changes in this edition.
The content of our 6th edition of Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies reflects many of the latest developments in the field. For example, we have added a new chapter on the fetal origins of adult disease by Ross and his colleagues. We now understand that a lot of what happens in utero determines health outcomes later in life. We have an exciting chapter on maternal nutrition and obesity, which is such a challenge in our population. We have a great chapter by Grobman and colleagues on evidence-based practice, quality, and safety. The diabetes chapter that Landon, Catalano, and I write describes the controversy about the hyperglycemic pregnancy outcome data that has led to new proposed criteria for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Whether those will be accepted still hasn’t been resolved but those criteria would increase the percentage of women with gestational diabetes two- or three-fold.
We’ve also added a significant number of new illustrations and tables. We now highlight the most important statements in every chapter. We’ve also limited the number of references to each chapter in the printed edition, although we have a large bibliography online and I think that’s helped keep the book pages down so that we could add more new material for our readers. I really do think that — judging by the illustrations, the new tables, and everything else that’s happened in this edition — it is clearly the best one that we’ve ever done.
I love to see a resident who has a presentation for a case conference go to the online version — which has a very powerful search engine — bring up the images, the tables, the key points that relate to the that topic, and within a matter of minutes put together a presentation that in our day would have been impossible.
We have 20 new authors. We have pushed hard to make sure that the people contributing to each and every chapter are the leaders in their fields — the most knowledgeable not only in content, but in how to apply that content to practice.
Something else that’s special about the book is its dedication to Ted Quilligan and Fred Zuspan, two of the founding fathers of maternal-fetal medicine.
