“We have contributors from all over the world… Having different perspectives brings us to more of a consensus that will benefit the patient.” Dr. Norman Scott

Dr. Scott’s Path to Knee Surgery

Throughout my career, my interests have focused just on the knee—both arthroplasty and arthroscopic ligament procedures. During my orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, I had the good fortune of being there when knee replacements were just developing. Knee replacements and knee surgery in sports medicine were both in their embryonic stage when I became interested in those areas.  I initially started in knee arthroplasty and have continued that to this day.  I also became involved with providing orthopaedic care to professional sports teams. I took care of the New York Knicks for 27 years, the New York Rangers for about eight years, and the WNBA’s New York Liberty for about another 10 years. For about 44 seasons in 27 years I was involved with those teams.

What’s New in this Edition of Insall and Scott Surgery of the Knee

In the fifth edition of Surgery of the Knee we’ve expanded many different areas. First, since many of the contributors are Knee Society members we decided to donate the proceeds from the book to the Knee Society.  It’s the first time the Knee Society has ever endorsed any such project. We also do quarterly updates online with the newest concepts in topics such as sports knee, adult knee reconstruction, and pediatric knee.  This allows readers who purchase Surgery of the Knee to get online updates in the form of symposium presentations from leading experts.  We’re also very excited about a new feature in this edition—a glossary of knee prostheses, where physicians and patients can look up online all the prostheses available. Physicians and researchers can also look back at what prostheses were available at a given time in history.

Another important aspect of this book is that it has an international flavor. It is not just a one country, one continent approach.  We have contributors from all over the world, which is important because there are many ways to approach various knee conditions. Having different perspectives brings us to more of a consensus that will benefit the patient.

The Value of Videos

We’re at a turning point in this generation with video.  My generation certainly would still rather go back to textbooks, although we realize the value of video. It is incredible now to see everything in video, so it’s definitely progress in the right direction. I suspect that we’ll be doing 3-D anatomy and 3-D surgery in the sixth edition. I think the progression to video is only for the benefit of all those who wish to be students of the knee and to gain more knowledge.  We believe we have the largest collection of videos—150 or more ranging from anatomy to surgical technique to physical examinations. The videos, we hope, appeal to a broad spectrum of paraprofessionals as well as orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in the knee.
