Purpose

The purpose is to provide a comprehensive audiovisual guide to ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. All aspects of ultrasound techniques from machine, to imaging techniques, to anatomical interpretation of tissues are described with great clarity. The online version is of great help making this book easily available for review and consultation.

Audience

The audience is anesthesia physicians both during training and when in practice. It is suitable for any physicians who practice regional anesthesia regardless of their experience. The author is a renowned expert and teacher in the field of regional anesthesia.

Features

The 75 different topics the book covers are broadly grouped into seven sections. The first section covers principles of sound-based image reconstruction by the machine. It discusses maneuvering of probes and various needle approaches to optimize injection techniques. The second section reviews the imaging of various structures that usually surround nerves. The next four sections cover practically every nerve block under the sun in the upper and lower limbs, head and neck area, and trunk. Each block is covered succinctly, in a few lines, with plenty of images, illustrations, and pictures to go with the text. At the end, the book reviews safety issues like injection related nerve injury as well local anesthetic complications. It also goes over their etiology and practical tips to reduce their incidence. The book ends with a set of questions for self-assessment.

Assessment

This is an excellent book on regional anesthesia. It is well written and edited, concise and to the point, with plenty of visual aids in the form of images and videos. This is all one needs to practice ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. It would be hard to improve on this book. It is a must-buy and a must-read for every anesthesia resident.
