Basil J. Zitelli, MD is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director, The Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is senior editor of Zitelli and Davis’ Atlas of Pediatric Physical Diagnosis, 7th Edition.
Dr. Zitelli received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his pediatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Following two years of military service, he returned to Johns Hopkins as chief resident in pediatrics.
His clinical and research interests include issues related to pediatric liver transplantation, particularly the long-term follow up of transplant patients. Dr. Zitelli’s work in pediatric medicine also extends to other countries, including efforts to develop partnerships with children’s hospitals in Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus.
An active member of several professional and scientific societies, Dr. Zitelli has received numerous honors and awards, including the American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award for Continuing Education and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Pennsylvania Chapter, Pediatrician of the Year. He is the author of more than 130 published journal articles, books, book chapters, reviews, and other publications, and has lectured and published extensively throughout his career.
