David P. Asprey, PhD, PA-C is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies and Services at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. He also serves as the assistant dean for Student Affairs and Curriculum. Dr. Asprey is the co-author, with Richard Dehn, of Essential Clinical Procedures, 3rd Edition.
In 2011, the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) awarded Dr. Asprey its Master Faculty Award. Dr. Asprey is a past president of the PAEA, and has chaired state and national PA committees. The Iowa PA program—for which Dr. Asprey has served as program director since 1998—is consistently ranked by US News and World Report as one of the top graduate degree PA programs in the country.
Dr. Asprey has served as a clinical preceptor for PA students at Iowa in his area of specialty—pediatric cardiology—and for several years held the position of clinical coordinator while also serving as assistant director. In addition to his post in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies and Services, he holds secondary appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and in the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. Dr. Asprey has been a mentor to nearly 100 master’s degree students completing their final research projects.
Dr. Asprey received a BS in Medicine-Physician Assistant Program from the University of Iowa in 1987. From the same institution, he also earned a PhD in higher education and an MA in instructional design and technology. He also holds a BA in biology from Bethel College.
