Fred A. Mettler Jr., MD, MPH, practices diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine in Albuquerque, where he is Chief of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at New Mexico Veterans Health Care System. He is currently the U.S. Representative to the United Nations for Radiation Effects. He was the Health Effects Team Leader of the International Chernobyl Project and served as an expert on radiation effects and accidents for the Peace Corps, Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Agency on Research on Cancer and the Japanese, Costa Rican, Peruvian, Panamanian and Polish governments.

Dr. Mettler authored recent NCRP and ICRP Reports on Radiation Protection during Radiological Terrorism and is a member of multiple subgroups on radiological terrorism for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Mettler also participated in reports addressing “Potential Radiation Exposure in Military Operations: Protecting the Soldier Before, During, After;” and “Adverse Reproductive Outcomes in Families of Atomic Veterans: The Feasibility of Epidemiologic Studies.” He played an active role in a workshop for “Assessing Medical Preparedness for a Nuclear Events” and a review of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research program.

Dr. Mettler has authored more than 300 scientific publications and books, including Essentials of Radiology, 3rd Edition; Essentials of Nuclear Medicine Imaging, 6th Edition; and Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation, 3rd Edition.
