James R. Andrews, MD is an international leader in the field of sports medicine. He has served as clinical professor of orthopaedics and sports medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and chairman of the American Sports Medicine Institute in Alabama. He is also a founding member of the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham. Dr. Andrews is recognized worldwide for his work in orthopaedic surgery and his scientific and clinic research contributions in knee, shoulder and elbow injury prevention and treatment. He has presented and lectured internationally, and has authored numerous scientific articles and books, including Physical Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete, 4th Edition.

As an educator, Dr. Andrews has had great influence on hundreds of orthopaedic and sports medicine fellows. His impact extends beyond academia, through his many professional affiliations. Among these many affiliations, he is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is the past president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Andrews also served on that board as its treasurer and its secretary. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Arthroscopy Association of North America as well as the International Knee Society. He has been recognized for his contributions to the field as an inductee of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction. Dr. Andrews also has received the Dave Dixon Louisiana Sports Leadership Award, the Distinguished American Award by the Auburn Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and the Excellence in Sports Medicine Award from the 2010 Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles.
