Jay S. Keystone, MD, MSc is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, as well as a senior staff physician in the Tropical Disease Unit at Toronto General Hospital, and the director of Medisys Travel and Adult Immunization Clinic in Toronto. He is senior author of Travel Medicine, 3rd Edition.

Dr. Keystone graduated from University of Toronto Medical School, where he received the Cody gold medal. He trained in internal medicine in Toronto and at the University of Michigan Medical Center. After obtaining his FRCPC, he studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he received a degree in Clinical Tropical Medicine. Dr. Keystone then did field work in Africa and South America, following which he became Director of the Tropical Disease Unit at the Toronto General Hospital, a position he held for 20 years. During a sabbatical leave in South India, he trained as a leprologist at the Scheifflin Leprosy Research and Training Centre.

Dr. Keystone has received numerous honors and has held medical society positions worldwide.  He is past president of the International Society of Travel Medicine, the clinical group of the American Society of Tropical Medicine, and the Canadian Society of International Health.  He is an accomplished lecturer who has spoken on several continents, has published more than 100 papers, and has coauthored 75 textbook chapters. In 2008 he was awarded the Ben Kean medal by the American Society of Tropical Medicine for his excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Dr. Keystone’s research interests are in delusional parasitosis leprosy, intestinal parasites, and travelers’ health.  An additional claim to fame is being the first and last attending physician to make rounds at the Toronto General Hospital on rollerblades.
