Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, FASA is Professor of Anesthesiology, Surgery, Biomedical Informatics, and Health Policy at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He is a co-author of Health Systems Science Review.
Dr. Ehrenfeld is a graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed an internship in internal medicine, a residency in anesthesiology, and an informatics fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Ehrenfeld currently serves as Chair-Elect of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association. He also serves as Director of Education Research for the Vanderbilt Office of Health Sciences Education, Director of the Vanderbilt Program for LGBTQ Health, and Associate Director of the Vanderbilt Anesthesiology & Perioperative Informatics Research (VAPIR) Division.
Active in the AMA since medical school, Dr. Ehrenfeld has served on the governing councils of both the AMA Resident and Fellow Section and the AMA Young Physicians Section. Currently, he was a co-investigator on the $1 million grant Vanderbilt received in 2013 as part of the AMA’s “Accelerating Change in Medical Education” initiative.
Dr. Ehrenfeld’s research has led to the presentation of more than 250 abstracts, as well as the publication of more than 175 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Systems and has co-authored 15 clinical textbooks that have been translated into multiple languages. Dr. Ehrenfeld has received numerous awards for his research including the inaugural NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Research Award from the NIH Director.
A combat veteran who deployed to Afghanistan during both Operation Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support Mission, Dr. Ehrenfeld continues to serve as a Commander in the United States Navy Reserve.
