Juan A Sanchez, MD, MPA, FACS is Vice President of Surgical Services and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, and Associate Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine. He is the author of Handbook of Perioperative and Procedural Patient Safety.

Dr. Sanchez earned his medical degree from the University of Florida and holds an advanced degree in public healthcare administration from Harvard. He completed surgical and research training at Georgetown, Columbia, and Yale and served in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

A cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon with extensive experience in medical education and healthcare leadership, Dr. Sanchez is a nationally recognized leader in the area of perioperative patient safety. He has authored or co-authored more than 120 professional and scientific publications and is active in a variety of editorial and peer-review functions for national and international professional societies and associations. He has served on the scientific review section of the American Heart Association and co-authored the associations’ position paper “Patient Safety in the Cardiac Operating Room.”

Previously, Dr. Sanchez was a professor at the University of Connecticut and Chair of Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT. Prior to that, he was chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Bridgeport Hospital in the Yale New Haven Health System and director of heart transplantation at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Sanchez performed the first pediatric heart transplant in eastern Kentucky and the first robotic mitral valve repair in Connecticut. He has been recognized for his clinical skills in Connecticut’s Top Doctors, Top Doctors of the New York Metro Area, and Best Doctors in America by U.S. News and World Report. He is past-president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and has provided testimony on various national and state public policy issues impacting patients and physicians. He is a previous Malcolm Baldrige Award Examiner and a Six Sigma Black Belt.
