Kim J. Burchiel, MD, FACS is the John Raaf Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Neurological Surgery and Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. He is a co-author of Functional Neurosurgery and Neuromodulation.
Dr. Burchiel received his medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. He completed his postgraduate work at the University of Washington, Seattle and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Burchiel is an internationally recognized expert on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), movement disorders, and facial pain, among other areas. He led OHSU’s Department of Neurological Surgery for 27 years and has served as president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Burchiel is Head of the Division of Functional Neurosurgery at OHSU, and also directs the Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery fellowship program that encompasses the surgical treatment of pain, movement disorders, and epilepsy.
His research interests are concerned with the physiology of nociception and neuropathic pains, including trigeminal neuralgia, the neurosurgical treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy surgery, image-guided neurosurgery, and the application of DBS to the problem of obesity. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, as well as five textbooks.
Dr. Burchiel’s honors include the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Honored Guest at the 2015 Congress of Neurological Surgeons meeting, and Honored Guest at the 2016 American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery meeting.
