Kirby I. Bland, MD is Professor of Surgical Oncology and Chairman Emeritus, Department of Surgery; Distinguished Faculty Scholar, School of Medicine; and Senior Advisor, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a co-author of The Breast: Comprehensive Management of Benign and Malignant Diseases, 5th Edition.

 

Dr. Bland received his medical degree from the University of Alabama, and performed a fellowship at the University of Texas/MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. He is internationally renowned for his contributions to surgical oncology and for his distinguished career as a general surgeon, researcher, and editor.

 

Dr. Bland’s research influence is far-reaching. He has been a Principal Investigator/Program Leader of the Cancer Center’s National Institute of Health’s SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) on two prior cycles and continues to be the Principal Investigator on UAB’s NIH T-32 Training Grant in Surgical Oncology. His scientific focus and research remains that of targeted therapies and chemoprevention of breast cancer with the intent for advancement of innovation and translational science in clinical trials for breast cancer and melanoma.

 

Dr. Bland is a sought-after speaker, presenting at medical schools and teaching universities around the country as well as serving the local community. He is the author or co-author of almost 600 journal publications, and is the author or editor of 44 textbooks. Dr. Bland is currently an active editorial board member of 12 scientific peer-reviewed journals and serves as the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Surgery.
