Marc C. Hochberg, MD, MPH, MACP is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Public Health; Head, Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, and Vice Chair, Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as well as Director, Medical Care Clinical Center, Veteran Affairs Maryland Health Care System. He is a co-author of Rheumatology, 7th Edition.

 

Dr. Hochberg received his MD and MPH from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and School of Hygiene and Public Health, respectively. He completed residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in rheumatology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was a member of the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1977 to 1991.

 

Dr. Hochberg’s research focuses on the clinical epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. He is Principal Investigator (PI) of the Baltimore Clinical Center for the Osteoarthritis Initiative and was PI of the Baltimore Clinical Center for the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. He also is Co-Principal Investigator of the Baltimore Hip Studies and Co-Director of the Pilot and Exploratory Studies Core of the University of Maryland Older Americans Independence Center.

 

Dr. Hochberg received the Clinical Research Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI), and was named one of only 50 “Postdoctoral Fellow Heroes” by the Arthritis Foundation. His numerous other awards and honors include the Mary Betty Stevens Clinical Research Award from the American College of Physicians (Maryland Chapter), the Roger Demers Prize at the 42nd Laurentian Conference of Rheumatology, the Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), the Lifetime Achievement Award from OARSI, the Art Modell Presidents Award from the Arthritis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Johns Hopkins University. He was named a Master of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology in 2014.

 

A prolific author, Dr. Hochberg has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and 60 book chapters, and is an editor of several rheumatology textbooks. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism and President of the USBJI. He has served as General Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors of OARSI, a member of the Board of Directors of both the ACR and the ACR Research and Education Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Chair, Standing Committee on Epidemiology of the International League of Associations of Rheumatology.
