Mark F. Newman, MD is Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. He was previously the Merel H. Harmel Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Newman is the lead author of Perioperative Medicine, 2nd Edition.
Dr. Newman earned his medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky and completed residency in anesthesiology at Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, after which he completed a fellowship in cardiac anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center. He served as the first medical director of Duke’s Global Perioperative Research Organization, director of the Perioperative Organ Protection Consortium and a professor in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Newman trained and mentored more than 30 Duke cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows. He has appeared on NBC Nightly News, North Carolina Now, and The Today Show, and has been invited to speak at more than 200 national and international meetings. In 2006, he was awarded the Bernard H. Eliasberg Medal for significant contributions in the field of anesthesiology, critical care, and pain management.
Best known for his two decades of research on cognitive dysfunction and quality of life following coronary artery bypass graft surgery, Dr. Newman has played a significant role in defining the demographic, procedural, and genetic risk factors for postsurgical cognitive decline. His discoveries regarding the management of body temperature and glucose levels to improve cognitive outcomes are widely used today.
