N. Franklin Adkinson, Jr., MD is Professor of Medicine and Program Director for the Graduate Training Programs in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a co-author of the highly regarded Middleton’s Allergy: Principles and Practice, 7th Edition, a two-volume set.
Dr. Adkinson was born in North Carolina and received his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he was a Morehead Scholar. After Johns Hopkins Medical School and an Osler Residency in internal medicine, he spent two years in post-doctoral research in immunology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
Dr. Adkinson’s clinical interests include drug hypersensitivity and intolerance, especially to antibiotics and aspirin-like drugs; latex allergy; and NSAID/aspirin reactions. His research has explored drug hypersensitivity, mechanisms of immunotherapy for allergic disorders; the pathogenesis and treatment of allergic asthma in children; and human IgE and IgG antibody responses. Currently, Dr. Adkinson is researching the natural history of childhood onset allergic asthma (CAMP-CS2); immune responses to drugs and chemicals; and diagnosis and management of drug hypersensitivity states.
Dr. Adkinson has held leadership roles in national and international professional organizations in allergy-immunology, and has served on numerous study groups and task forces for the discipline. He has authored over 300 scientific articles and reviews, and is currently managing editor of the premier comprehensive textbook of allergic diseases, Middleton’s Allergy: Principles and Practice. In 2010 Dr. Adkinson was recognized with the Distinguished Clinician Award of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
