Phillip H. McKee, MD, FRCPath completed his medical training (MB, BCh, BAO) at Queen’s University, Belfast, N. Ireland, in 1971. His post-graduate training in Pathology gained him the MRCPath in 1978 and subsequently the FRCPath. He was Senior Lecturer at St. Thomas’ Hospital London (University of London) from 1979 to 1998. While at St. Thomas’ Hospital, Dr. McKee established the Diploma in Dermatopathology examination of the Royal College of Pathologists.
Dr. McKee moved to Boston in 1998 as Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School, Director of Dermatopathology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2004 he escaped from snowy Massachusetts to sunny Arizona to continue working as author, lecturer and consultant (overseas consultations). He spent three months in 2005 as Visiting Professor at the Pathology Department, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, S. Africa.
Among the honors and awards Dr. McKee has received are the Elson B. Helwig Memorial Lecture at the American Society of Dermatopathology in Chicago in 2003, the First Prize in the Dermatology category for Pathology of the Skin with Clinical Correlation, 3rd edition, First prize in the Annual BMA Medical Book Competition in 2005, the Neil P. Smith Medal in Dermatopathology (UK) in 2006, Honorary Lifetime Membership of The American Society of Dermatopathology in 2009 and Honorary Lifetime Membership of the British Society for Dermatopathology in 2009.
Dr. McKee has 159 publications including those in peer-reviewed journals and chapters. He has authored 11 textbooks, the most well-known of which is Pathology of the Skin with Clinical Correlation, now in its 4th edition and titled McKee’s Pathology of the Skin. He is also an author of Dermatopathology, a volume in the High Yield Pathology series, along with Drs. Nooshin Brinster, Vince Liu and Hafeez Diwan.
Although his life has been dominated by dermatopathology, his real passion in life after Gracie is Ferrari. His wife Gracie was Associate Professor in the Pathology department at Massachusetts General Hospital and author of 4 textbooks, and associate editor and contributor to several others, but is now a full-time artist. They have 4 children with widely-differing careers: DJ, high-school English teacher, pediatrics Fellow and TV reporter/producer. Their 2 cats just eat and sleep!
