Richard L. Guerrant, MD is the Thomas H. Hunter Professor of International Medicine in Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He also founded and directs the Center for Global Health, a University-wide initiative that addresses critical global health challenges. A graduate of the UVA School of Medicine, Dr. Guerrant trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Harvard Medical Service of the Boston City Hospital, the National Institutes of Health, and Johns Hopkins University. He returned to the UVA as chief resident in 1972. In 2008, Dr. Guerrant received the Walter Reed Medal—the highest honor given by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

The author of hundreds of scientific and clinical articles, reviews, and major textbook chapters, Dr. Guerrant also co-edited six references, including Tropical Infectious Diseases: Principles, Pathogens and Practice, 3rd Edition.
