Robert J. Mason, MD holds the Cetalie & Marcel Weiss Chair in Pulmonary Medicine at National Jewish Health. He is a pioneer medical researcher who identified biochemical processes that enable the lung to recover from injury and disease, developing the method to isolate lung epithelial cells that make surfactant, an essential fluid in the air passages that contributes to the elastic properties of lung tissue.

Dr. Mason is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Professors, the American College of Physicians, the American Physiologic Society, the American Society of Virology, and the American Society of Cell Biology. Dr. Mason has received the Scientific Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society, an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association, and an NIH Merit Award.  He is an author of the two-volume set, Murray and Nadel’s Textbook of Respiratory Medicine, 5th Ediiton.
