Sudhansu Chokroverty, MD, FRCP, FACP, is Professor and Co-Chairman of Neurology for Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine and Program Director of Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine at the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. Dr. Chokroverty is also Professor of Neuroscience at Seton Hall University School of Graduate Medical Education in South Orange, New Jersey, and Clinical Professor of Neurology at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is the author of Sleep Disorders in Medicine, 3rd Edition and a co-author of Restless Legs Syndrome and the Atlas of Sleep Medicine, 2nd Edition.
After graduating from Medical College, Calcutta and University of Calcutta, India, Dr. Chokroverty received post-graduate training in internal medicine, neurology, and neurophysiology at hospitals in the UK and Chicago. He is board certified in neurology, electrodiagnostic medicine, sleep medicine, and clinical neurophysiology, and has examined for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Sleep Medicine, the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology, and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
Dr. Chokroverty is the Founding and Past President (two terms) of the World Association of Sleep Medicine, an international organization devoted to promoting sleep health throughout the world. He was also on the Medical Advisory Board of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. He was the Founding Chair of the Sleep Section of the American Academy of Neurology, a member of the Advisory Board of the National Center of Sleep Disorders Research of the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the Chair of the Sleep Science Award Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. Chokroverty is also the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Sleep Medicine, an international journal dealing with clinical sleep disorders. He is the co-editor of the Journal of the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute, and he has been on the editorial boards of 13 scientific journals and an ad-hoc reviewer for 28 national and international journals.
Dr. Chokroverty has participated in numerous national and international conferences as lecturer, session chair, continuing medical education course director and faculty member, and grand round speaker. He is the author or editor of numerous books dealing with sleep medicine, management of epilepsy, movement disorders, and magnetic stimulation in clinical neurophysiology. He has published extensively in both national and international scientific journals, producing over 500 contributions. Dr. Chokroverty has been listed in Best Doctors in America, Best Doctors in Northeast and Metropolitan New York Area, and Guide to America’s Top Physicians.
Dr. Chokroverty’s recent research interest has focused on sleep and movement disorders; restless legs syndrome; sleep disordered breathing in neuromuscular disorders; autonomic failure and neurodegenerative diseases; and actigraphy in insomnia.
