William T. Shearer, MD, PhD is Professor of Pediatrics and Immunology in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is also Head, Section of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Pediatrics; Medical Director, HIV/AIDS Center; and Chief, Allergy and Immunology Service at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. Dr. Shearer is a co-author of Clinical Immunology, 4th Edition.
Dr. Shearer received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Barnes Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and a PhD from Wayne State University School of Medicine. His board certifications include diagnostic and laboratory immunology, sleep medicine, and allergy and immunology.
Dr. Shearer is director of the Baylor Pediatric HIV Research Center, and a member of the Network Executive Committee of the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Group, which performs clinical trials of antiretroviral agents, such as protease inhibitors, and immune reagents. He is also a member of the Scientific Leadership Group of the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study, co-director the Center for AIDS Research, and co-principal investigator of a research study observing possible cardiovascular toxicity of antiretroviral agents in HIV-infected and HIV-exposed children. Dr. Shearer is principal investigator of the Sleep Studies in HIV-positive Older Children/Adolescents, which pursues the interrelationships of sleep, fatigue, asthma, and HIV/AIDS in older children and adolescents infected with HIV-1. His research extends to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration spaceflight, which focuses on human space flight models and immune responses.
