Description
This is the fifth edition of what has become the classic, go-to reference for orthopedic sports medicine. DeLee and Drez has always been the comprehensive reference in the field. Adding Mark Miller as the titular lead is a drop kick, as he is not only highly respected, but also arguably the best educator of his generation. The two-volume book is impressively broad with nearly a quarter of it covering the nonorthopedic/musculoskeletal part of sports medicine. I loved the online accompaniment that has over 100 videos of narrated PowerPoint presentations that cover the topics targeted in each chapter. The original edition was published in 1994, with the most recent in 2015.
Purpose
The purpose is to update the classic comprehensive reference in the field of orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Miller actually considered dropping the term orthopedic from the title, leaving only the term “sports medicine” to represent the breadth of coverage. However, retaining the term orthopedic is a fair representation, as three quarters of the book provides great depth of information about and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and problems.
Audience
While this is obviously the go-to reference for orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents in training, it is a great reference for sports chiropractors, primary care sports physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers. The authors of this edition, Drs. Miller and Thompson, have led the publication of a great reference by recruiting over 300 contributors, among them some of the leading experts and most highly respected educators and leaders in the field.
Features
As noted, the first quarter of the book covers a broad range of sports medicine topics, including such issues as the team physician, sports-specific injuries, nutrition etc. There is also a wonderful group of chapters at the close of the book targeting pediatric athletes. The core of the book is a sequential series of chapters that march through the musculoskeletal system from shoulder to toes.
Assessment
There are lots of good books available, but there is only one DeLee, Drez, and Miller. I believe the best comparison is not to any other existing competitor but rather to itself (i.e. previous editions). Once again, the authors have done a wonderful job of creating an up-to-date comprehensive reference that is the best on the market. If you buy only one sports medicine book for your orthopedic library, this should be it.
