Abul K. Abbas, MBBS, is a professor and the Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of California San Francisco, where he moved after having spent 22 years at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  He received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree from the All-India Institute of Medical Science in New Delhi, completed his residency training in pathology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital) Boston, MA, and later became a research fellow in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Over the years Dr. Abbas received numerous teaching and research honors including the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis-Rous-Whipple and Robbins Distinguished Educator Awards from the American Society for Investigative Pathology and the Irving M. London Award from the Harvard-MIT MD Program in Health Sciences and Technology. He was also elected a member of the Institue of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences in 2002, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009.

With more than 190 published papers to his name, Dr. Abbas has served on the editorial boards of several noted immunology/pathology health journals and remains active on the boards of Immunity and Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease.. He also authored or co-authored several best-selling Elsevier medical books including Cellular and Molecular Immunology, 7th Edition, Basic Immunology, 4th Edition, Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th Edition, and Robbins Basic Pathology, 9th Edition.
