Alastair Burt, BSc, MD, FRCPath, FIBiol is Professor of Pathology and Dean of Clinical Medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and Honorary Consultant Histopathologist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. He is the lead author of MacSween’s Pathology of the Liver, 6th Edition.

Dr. Burt received his education from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Institute of Liver Studies. Currently, as Dean of Clinical Medicine, he is responsible for maintaining effective partnerships between the faculty and NHS agencies, for developing the capabilities of the faculty to carry out world-leading translational medical research, for oversight of clinical academic training, and for oversight of the state-of-the-art clinical research platforms based in the university.

Dr. Burt’s research interests include the role of hepatic stellate cells in fibrogenesis, the significance of the ductular reaction and epithelial mesenchymal transition in liver disease, the mechanisms of fatty liver disease, immune phenomena in autoimmune cholangiopathy and allograft rejection, innervation of the liver (including ontogenesis), and lymphangiogensis in the liver.
