Gregory Poland, MD is Director, Department of Vaccine Research Group, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is the author of Vaccinations.
Dr. Poland received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University and performed post-graduate work at University of Minnesota, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and Mayo Clinical Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. His areas of study were Clinical Trials, Statistics, Research Design, Epidemiology and Molecular Biology, as well as advanced training in Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Poland studies the immunogenetics of vaccine response in adults and children, pursuing challenges posed by infectious diseases and bioterrorism through clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic vaccine research. Dr. Poland and his team coined the term “vaccinomics” in 2007, referring to the development of personalized vaccines based on the increased understanding of immune response phenotype-genotype information.
He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Research Career Achievement Award from Mayo Clinic, the MERIT Award from National Institutes of Health, the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence, the Charles Merieux Lifetime Achievement Award in Vaccinology, and the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. He is Editor-in-Chief of Vaccine and Founder and President of the Edward Jenner Society.
