Stanley J. Szefler, MD is Director, Pediatric Asthma Research Program and Research Medical Director, The Breathing Institute, Children’s Hospital Colorado and Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado. He is a co-author of Personalizing Asthma Management for the Clinician.


Dr. Szefler received his medical degree from State University of New York, Buffalo. After a residency in Pediatrics at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine, he performed fellowships in Clinical Pharmacology and Allergy and Immunology at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo/University at Buffalo. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Allergy and Immunology.


Dr. Szefler’s clinical interests include childhood asthma, asthma pharmacotherapy, inhaled corticosteroids, biomarkers, predictors of treatment response, and monitoring treatment response. His major research contributions are directed toward the appropriate use of long-term control therapy in asthma, including the recognition of variability in response to asthma therapy. He has identified biomarkers and asthma characteristics that can be used to predict and individualize asthma therapy.


Dr. Szefler is a member of the Expert Panel for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s National Asthma Education and Prevention Program on “Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma” and a member of the Global Initiative for Asthma Science Committee. Since 1997, he has been a Deputy Editor for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He has published more than 400 scientific articles and co-edited books on severe asthma, childhood asthma, and pediatric allergy and immunology.


He is the Principal Investigator for the Denver site of the NHLBI AsthmaNet-Pediatrics Section and Co-Investigator for the NIAID Inner-City Asthma Consortium (ICAC) II. He is also a Co-Director for the NIEHS/EPA Childhood Environmental Health Center Grant at National Jewish Health and the University of Colorado, Denver. Dr. Szefler is also the director of a school-based asthma program for the Denver Public School system that seeks to define the prevalence and severity of asthma, identify those most significantly affected, and to direct those children to state-of-the-art asthma care.
